Book 3 Chapters 1-3

Book 3, Chapter 1: "‘Down with Big Brother!’ Yes, I said that! Said it over and over again, it seems. Between you and me, old man, I'm glad they got me before it went any further […]."
"Who denounced you?" said Winston.
"It was my little daughter," said Parsons with a sort of doleful pride. "She listened at the keyhole. Heard what I was saying, and nipped off to the patrols the very next day. Pretty smart for a nipper of seven, eh? I don't bear her any grudge for it. In fact I'm proud of her. It shows I brought her up in the right spirit, anyway." (pg 193)

This conversation taken from book 3, chapter 1 is about how a father was turned into the Thought Police by one of his own family members. That just goes to show that even the children of Oceania are so completely brainwashed by the Big Brother, The Party and the Thought Police. With children, the success of the Party’s plan manifests further in that the children serve as extra surveillance forces for the Party. The child of Party member Parsons is so overcome with love for and indoctrination by the Party that she surveys and turns in her own father in for Thought crime. To me, I found this conversation to be extremely painful because it was his own daughter that turned him in. His daughter wrongfully turned her father into the patrols yet, the father is proud that he raise her to have those correct mannerisms.

  1. Hey Lysette! I really liked the quote that you chose for this week's blog. I thought your analysis was very thorough and touched on the most important part of the quote. Children are usually expected to admire their parents and follow their footsteps. However, this quote displays the power and negative effect that the Party has on children. It's sad how children are ready and hungry to turn in their parents for dumb crimes. I liked your blogpost this week.

  2. I love your quote! I completely agree with the fact that I would find this painful since it was his own child that had turned him in and not really that proud. Which is why I am surprised that Parsons says he is proud of his children- this very much shows how not only the children are brainwashed but also some of the parents are. Parsons is so brainwashed that he is merely just proud that his child turned him in and not sad which is what the Party would want. I also loved how you mention the fact that with the complete control the Party has on the Party does allow them to further their agenda since they are more eager to please the Party since it is all they have known. I really loved your thoughts on this quote!

  3. Hai Lysette, I also chose the same quote, so it was interesting to see an analysis on the quote from a different perspective. I also agree that their conversation was painful because it is sad that his own child reported him. Even though he was reported, he somehow was still proud of his daughter for turning him to the patrols.

  4. I like your theme and the set up of your pictures and text. Your quote was really good and well analyze. It sad on how his own daughter will turn him in and whats even more sad is the idea that the father had when she turn him in. The way children are used in Oceania is just sad. Kids are seen as innocent creatures and to be used like this to keep power it just twisted. Over all goof job.

  5. I think this quote is interesting because of how proud the person is of being denounced. It is crazy how children have also been brainwashed. However, the person is proud because he says that he was raised his daughter right and if he was taken away, then nothing would happen to her. I did not pay too much attention to this quote, but your explanation made me realize how important it is.
