Theme: Rebellion Through Sexual Desires
Chapter 3 Quote: "With its grace and carelessness it seemed to annihilate a whole culture, a whole system of thought, as though Big Brother and the Party and the Thought Police could all be swept into nothingness by a single splendid movement of the arm." (pg. 33)

Chapter 6 Quote: "When he had gone with that woman it had been his first lapse in two years or thereabouts. Consorting with prostitutes was forbidden, of course, but it was one of those rules that you could occasionally nerve yourself to break. It was dangerous, but it was not a life-and-death matter. To be caught with a prostitute might mean five years in a forced-labor camp: not more, if you had committed no other offence." (pg 56)
According to Winston, it would have seemed that the Party's main goal to take away an pleasure from sexual contact. It was considered to be nasty, or even looked down upon if one had sex or preformed sexual acts. I think that Winston's actions are rather harsh, that he shouldn't have to entreat such comfort from someone other than his wife. Winston was no stranger to being in the company of prostitutes; it was two years since his last encounter with one. I think that Winston's want, to be with prostitutes can be driven by the fact that he wants to rebel in anyway possible, from Big Brother, The Party and the Though Police. Also considering how the Though Police monitors people, Winston might have just wanted to realized some repressed anger from constantly being watched. I find it interesting how when he talks about the punishment for being caught with a prostitute, he does not seem worried. Instead, he acts like he does not care, that it would not be the worst punishment to receive.Chapter 6 Quote: "And what he wanted, more even than to be loved, was to break down that wall of virtue, even if it were only once in his whole life. The sexual act, successfully performed, was rebellion. Desire was thought crime."(pg 59)
This other quote taken from chapter 6 can be used to help rationalize the fact that Winston uses his sexual acts as a form of rebellion. When we think about rebellion, we think about standing up for ourselves and fighting back, but Winston's methods are different. All-throughout these 4 chapters, we have learned that Winston releases his frustration though his sexuality. He knows that what he is thinking is bad, because if he is caught, he will get in trouble with the Thought Police. "Desire is a though crime," can lead us to believe that Winston had planned and executed his rebellion through his sexual motifs.

Where did you find your Thought Police photo? I really like how you chose a photo that relates to all of your quotes. I also admire the way that you connected all of Winston Smith's sexual actions with his thoughts on Big Brother and the current system. Your thorough analyses for each quote is helpful for readers to understand any confusing aspects of the novel.
ReplyDeleteHey Lysette! It was quite spectacular for you to use 3 quotes one from chapter 3 and two from chapter 6 that all correlate to each other. I was pretty impressed that the quote from chapter 3 sort of holds as a foundation for the two quotes that you found for chapter 6. In this book, in my opinion, I like how their way of rebellion is explained in different forms such as what you explained as sexual acts. Their thought of rebellion can be seen to be risky since if they were to ever to get caught up with the Thought Police, they can face some serious consequences.
ReplyDeleteI liked how you incorporated the two pictures, one of "Big Brother" that was portrayed in the 1984 film, and the other of a sort of thought police poster that warns the citizens of Oceania to not even think about committing a thought crime.
I also liked how you used 3 different quotes related to each other rather than one long quote to encompass the whole story of sexual acts being a form of rebellion of citizens of Oceania. The way in which you used the 3 quotes from the two chapters was really convenient to the reader since if anyone wants to know about sexual acts as a form of rebellion for the people of Oceania, they can just turn to your blog to see the whole story related to the rebellion.
Overall, good job, and I hope to read your next blog next week.
Before I say anything else , I love your pictures girl ! I like how they truly relate to what you’re talking about and it makes it faily easy for anyone to understand why it’s related to your quotes. Really did follow the theme of “rebellion through sexual desire” none of your quotes really went off topic. You did a great job explaining and analyzing your quotes.
ReplyDeleteThe way that the pictures compliment the quote and the way that you analyzed it is crazy good. By showing a visual of Big Brother with your quote it helps us understand it better. When you started elaborating on how the people of Oceania view Big Brother that picture showed me what it could feel like to be in Oceania. Great post.
DeleteI really like the quote that you chose. I do agree that this quote can explain how most people in Oceania feel about Big Brother. He is supposed to be a leader, but he isn't acting like one. He is way to controlling. Great blog!
