Book 2, Chapters 3-6

Book 2, Chapter 4 Quote: She knew the whole driveling song by heart, it seemed. Her voice floated upward with the sweet summer air, very tuneful, charged with a sort of happy melancholy … It struck him as a curious fact that he had never heard a member of the Party singing alone and spontaneously. It would even have seemed slightly unorthodox, a dangerous eccentricity, like talking to oneself …
"You can turn round now," said Julia. He turned round, and for a second almost failed to recognize her … The transformation that had happened was much more surprising than that. She had painted her face. (pg 117-18)

This quote explains how Winston is not used to seeing Julia with makeup, because it is banned in the Oceania and the future. If you think about it, he almost did not recognize Julia because she could have possibly applied her makeup wrong or not in a good way, resulting in her not being noticeable. Its funny how he used the term "painted her face", as a way to say she applied makeup. Either her makeup was so good that it looked like a painting, or so bad it looked like a mess. Julia painting her face is also a form of rebellion. Since wearing makeup is banned, her wearing it is a way for her to express herself, which is what the Though Police do not want.

  1. I agree with the statement you made regarding Julia using the makeup as an act of rebellion. Like many of her actions, they have the pure intention to make a blow towards the Party, for example having sex with many men. I'm interested in seeing what the future has in store for her as she is such a rebellious person with a good way to hide it.

  2. The quote you chose was really interesting it made a lot of sense why Winston saw Julia the way she did. I like how you when into detailed of how her makeup looked to Winston. Also liked how you brought that this was one of many acts of rebellion Julia has done. Very nice analysis.
