Book 2 Chapter 7 Quote:"The terrible thing that the Party had done was to persuade you that mere impulses, mere feelings, were of no account, while at the same time robbing you of all power over the material world."

This quote explains the horrible mind games that the Party used to gain control over the citizens of Oceania. The Party members would try to convince their citizens that they do not need
to think or feel another emotions other than what The Party is telling them to feel. While they were doing this, it blinded the citizens as to what was really going on. They robbed them of all their possessions, including their own thoughts.
Book 2 Chapter 8 Quote: "You will work for a while, you will be caught, you will confess, and then you will die... There is no possibility that any perceptible change will happen within our own lifetime. We are the dead."
The average Oceania citizen lives a life that has layed out for them, with no way to deviate from the expected course. Most of the citizens have to deal with how their lives are going to come out. They cannot change it, since the Party and Thought Police are very strict and vigilant. If this would happen in today's society, I feel like there would be a lot more rebellion going on.
Book 2 Chapter 9 Quote: "It was the product of a mind similar to his own, but enormously more powerful, more systematic, less fear-ridden. The best books, he perceived, are those that tell you what you know already."
In my opinion, I find this quote to be very important because it can express Winston's love and appreciation for books. This particular book he was excited to read and he expressed his enjoyment with Julia. This book helps him realize that the Party's need for war is fueled by the want to rule over most of the citizens. He also learns the "War is Peace" propaganda from this book.

I really enjoyed you first quote and your analysis on it. I agree that the Party is only concerned with stripping people of their own thoughts and emotion to ensure that they follow the minds of the Party. It is wrong how they are doing this for their own benefit. I also liked your second quote and your prediction on what would happen if it were to be applied to modern society. I think that there would be a lot of violence and death. I can't imagine having one path and having to follow it for the rest of my life. I would be tired of the boring cycle after a week. Overall, I really enjoyed this week's post.
ReplyDeleteThe quote that captured my attention was the second one because it reminds me of societies that are currently like that such as China's. I like your analysis and how you said that every citizen's life is set up. However if our society was like that, there would most certainly be rebellion but to no avail as the society would quickly vanish those people.
ReplyDeleteYour analysis of the quotes are really nice. You did a great job when choosing these quotes. I really liked your second quote and explanation. I agree with your response as well. Its sad that Oceania citizens have there life planned out by another human being. I find that really stupid that they don't notice that their life is being control. I also agree with your last statement, there would be more resistance in today's society.
ReplyDeleteThe quote that I found the most interesting is the one about Winston's love of reading. I think this fueled Winston's desire to rebel against the Party's control. I feel like reading books and being enlightened allows indvidual's to have their own opinion and to express themselves. I enjoyed that you connected why Winston loves reading and which book liked to read. The whole point of that quote is very relevant.
ReplyDeleteI think what Winston looks for in books in knowledge. New knowledge that is not found in the books with altered stories and altered history by the Party. It is hard to learn about something new when everything is biased to so the readers only learn about one thing or one side of things
