Book 3, chapters 4-6

Chapter 4 Quote:

"He obeyed the Party, but he still hated the Party. In the old days he had hidden a heretical mind beneath an appearance of conformity. Now he had retreated a step further: in the mind he had surrendered, but he had hoped to keep the inner heart inviolate. He knew that he was in the wrong, but he preferred to be in the wrong." (pg. 231)

I believe that this quote explains how Winston was once rebelling against the Party, but ultimately had to give up because he could no longer resist the torture they put him through. Winston is feeling a lot of pain and anger. He hates the Party and disagrees with them but is unwillingly obeying their rules. He is trying to tell himself to follow their sayings but finds it hard to do so. He finally admits to himself that his new thoughts are wrong and he really does hate Big Brother. Although he hates Big Brother, he still conforms to them and how they run Oceania. While being tortured though, Winston still admits his love for Julia by calling out for her while being held captive.

  1. I like what you said. I agree with you guys that he jut accepts it and follows the rules of the party. As much as Winston hates the party he just wants to obey them and listen to everything they say.
